Richard C. Banks Richard Banks is Winsborough Academy's top baseball player and a strong athlete. On a usual day, he's very bright, talkative, and maybe a little obnoxious, but always well-meaning. Unfortunately for him, his circumstances are not normal, and we see him primarily through the way he deals with -- or attempts to deal with -- his grief of his cousin, Robert.

"Twigs" Parker Twigs Parker is one of the top students at Winsborough Academy -- well on his way to school Valedictorian -- with secret passion for painting and drawing. He is Richard's sidekick, roommate, and best friend. He's always trying his best to help his friend.

Dewey Bonham A sarcastic, laid-back and slightly arrogant guy, Dewey is a best friend of Richard's. One could even say they are like brothers! Dewey often spends his time playing cards and smoking cigarettes. He shares his dorm with Nathan, and will often pester him.

Nathan Thacker Nathan is a work-obsessed trumpet player who unfortunately has perpetual eyebags due to the little amount of sleep he gets. Nathan usually comes off as blunt or grumpy, and doesn't really like talking to people all that much. He often gets pestered by his roommate, Dewey.
